Retaining Walls

Walls that hold — and keep holding. Built on a proper base, drained right, and set to last across Hanover, Chesley, Walkerton and Grey-Bruce.

Hold the ground. Transform the yard.

A slope that washes out every spring, a garden bed that needs a clean edge, a level patio carved from a hillside — a retaining wall solves all of it. We build block, stone and timber walls for properties across Hanover, Chesley, Walkerton, Paisley and the broader Grey-Bruce region.

Done right, a retaining wall is invisible engineering. The wall you see is solid and straight, while everything behind and beneath it — the drainage, the base, the backfill — is working constantly so you never have to think about it.

We handle the full scope: excavation, base prep, drainage, construction, and cleanup. When we leave, the wall is finished and the site is clear.

How we build them.

01 — Excavate & compact

A solid start

We dig to solid bearing and build the granular base in 100 mm lifts, compacting each one before the next goes in. This is the step that separates a wall that stays from one that moves.

02 — Drainage first

Water finds a way out

Weeping tile at the footer and clean gravel backfill give water a path out, not a reason to push. Hydrostatic pressure is the number one cause of wall failure — we eliminate it before the first block goes down.

03 — Set with batter

Built to hold its angle

Every course is set with a calibrated backward lean — the wall's structural resistance to the soil behind it. Cap blocks are pinned or bonded. The line stays straight and true.

Why ours stay put.

Three things separate a wall that stands for decades from one that leans by its third winter — and all three happen before the first block goes down.

  • Compacted base, built in thin lifts. Dumping and tamping all at once leaves voids. Thin, compacted lifts close them — the wall can't settle what isn't there to settle.
  • Real drainage behind the wall. Hydrostatic pressure is the number one reason retaining walls fail. Weeping tile plus clean gravel backfill means water has a path out, not through your wall.
  • Proper batter for the height and load. A wall set plumb has no resistance to the soil leaning it forward. We dial in the correct backward lean calibrated to the wall's height and the load it carries.
